It worked out well, as I was trying to fit an emptyhand chunk of material into the wednesday class, which made for a 2 hour class.

The bulk of the material is Inosanto-Lacosta blend (via Jarred and other sources), with liberal doses of whatever else seems relavent and related (including the small chunk of Hagibis we covered when Master Rey visited).

It's interesting as it can be related in 2 directions. The kali guys relate the weaponry to the emptyhand, and the new folks can more easily grasp some of the concepts (like tool destruction and some of the more angular attacks) with some exposure to the weaponry.

I'm trying to make a coherent and cohesive structure that allows for entry at any point in the material, but has sufficient scope for advanced folks to keep learning as well.

th

Thursday Knife class:

Basically we covered counters/defences for a forehand stab in pakal grip:

Empty hand:
-Receive/catch with left hand similar to in hubud, but try and make the catch as close to his wrist as possible.
-Turn wrist in (anticlockwise}. This will (or should) bend him, drop him a bit.
-You can then strike with the free hand, lock, whatever.

Variation:

If it all goes horribly wrong and you don't secure the grip, close and turn your arm in and up, trapping/ controlling his elbow. This should achieve a similar result.

Knife to knife: (pakal to pakal)

1:

-Catch the attack with a Pekiti Tersia type sidestep and tap motion.
-Circle the arm anticlockwise until it reaches 6 o'clock.
-Wristlock (kote gaeshi type) with live hand, pushcutting the back out the hand, while trapping his lead foot with yours.
-From this entry you can cut, stab, lock,....

2:

-Female triangle to his outside, cutting the outside of his knife arm, pushing up.
-Pull\ hook straight down, jerking him forward.
-From here, the neck presents as an obvious target, but you can apply whatever..

Stuff to note with this one -
-With the hook\ pull keep it close to you, if its out from you he can recover and cut your side.
-Don't extend too far on the initial cut. Unfortunately it's taking a while for everyone to get the drill down. I came prepared with a few techniques to blend into the drill, but didn't have a chance to show them. Next time maybe. Then we did full sparring. Haven't done it for a while, and I'm slightly rusty. Blame the bung arm!

It seems we are having a bit of a re-org on the kali class front. Monday will be more practical stick fighting, with a strong DBMA leaning. Wednesday remains knife. I think Damian is trying to integrate some Pekiti Tirsa material nto it, so yay! Saturday will be the Bakbakan kali class, both stick/sword and knife. More technical emphasis, with balangkas and forms and such, but still some fighting (I hope!). Next year Jarred may teach some JKD/kali emptyhand classes of a more technical bend than his MT classes.

No Balintawak again this week, but maybe next week, as I have a couple of weeks of for the O'Malley's visit.

I *really* should post after each class, as I can never remeber all the details...

Anyway, Monday's kickboxing class was typically fiendish. Jarred has been training with a guy that teaches sports-specific conditioning at the gym He trains MT at. This guy showed Him some very upleasant stuff. Bear in mind the gym J trains at has some world-class fighters, so this stuff is not slack... As I said, don't remember too much, but it hurt. Oh, and we did some boxing sparring (very slow and light...)as well.

For the stick class I got the chance to do a bit of teaching. By a staggering coincedence, I got a couple of Marc Denny's DBMA dvd's for my birthday last week (thanks, the Girlie!). One was on the subject of attacking blocks. It deals with closing the gap from outside long range to close range, and grappling. It all starts with the attacking blocks drill, consisting of a sequence of blocks and strikes, around which entries to different ranges can be trained. Very nice, practical, and a bunch of fun. We spent most of the class getting the flow of the drill down, and we'll play with it some more later.

I didn't get to Balintawak on Tuesday, as we were going to have dinner with a relly of the Girlie's, who didn't show up...

Another nasty kickboxing class with Jarred on Wednesday (again, I'll blog earlier to get the drills down...), and a good knife class afterwards. Mainly working the cuatro drill, but mixing up pakal and sak-sak grips. We also worked a couple of scenario/technique thingys (against an pakal grip #1 thrust) and a bit od sparring to finish. We finished a bit early, as Damian thought He smelt gas from a next-door building, so He called the gas people who told Him to get us the hell out...

On Thurday Clint was doing a mainly knife class. We started with pakal grip hubud, as worked a few variations. I wwas playing with John, and we added a few extra bits. We ended up doing knife sparring. As they hadn't really done much (or any, in some cases) they picked on someone who had to parnter everyone. And that would be me...

In all, most the folks did OK. One guy (Harley) had done some before, when He trained with our Bakbakan group, and He remembered most of it! (Damnit). We didn't use headgear. From how we started in the early days, the guys will get a fright when headshots are allowed...

The week's training so far...

Jarred's class was hard, but I can't remember too much about it (should've blogged earlier). I did get Damien's knee in my shin during one of the drills though - ouch!

For the kali class, we worked on the forms for the grading- specifically Lengua de Fuego (the 2nd knife form) and Lakbay Siniwali (double stick form).

Last night, I actually remember Jarred's drills:

First skipping to warm up, then some parry drills -

- Feeder -> Jab - cross, receiver -> parry - parry.

- As above, then receiver makes rear leg round kick to outside lead leg.

- as 1st one, but receiver lead round kicks inside lead leg at same time as the cross is parried.

- Feeder jabs, receiver parrys, F crosses and R slips outside punch and uppercuts, then rear round kick to leg(s).

Then some focus pad slipping drills:

- F flashes jab, while moving around (for tool practice)

- F flashes jab, R jabs, F jabs, R slips outside punch, F flashes cross, R crosses

- F flashes jab, R jabs, F crosses, R slips outside punch, F flashes jab, R jabs.

- Finally combine the last 2 (1 then other) and jab/cross or cross/jab at the end.

After this some thai pad work:

- jab - cross - rear round kick.
- jab - cross - lead round kick.
- jab - cross - jab - cross - rear round kick.
- jab - cross - jab - cross - lead round kick.

Finally, for a warm-down, we did the parry drills from earlier.

-----------------

After this was knife class. As we had a couple of newbies, Damian spent some time outlining the system.

First we did Alas.

Then we did some basic defensive cutting, and sparred. Not too much new stuff, plenty to think about with the 2 forms for grading...

OK, so I missed posting last week's training. Get over it :) !

This week I did actually train (I did last week, but a weekend away seem's to have messed up my memory...)

Monday was stick. Kurt's last kali session. He, me, Damian, Darren, and Frank (a new guy) trained. After warmup - into sparring! I was trying to work on my footwork and timing, which meant less emphasis on smash and bash. Well, for the first 10 seconds of each fight! After several rounds, we worked on balangkas 1.

No knife class on wednesday, as we all went out for a meal to celebrate Kurt going overseas. Not that we were hapy to see him go... although Basil the cat was happy to get his bedroom back...

On thursday Jarred and I visited Clint's club. Jarred taught them hubud, first with a stick, adding a simple witik counter, and then emptyhand. Rather new and complex material for them, but they all seemed to grasp it OK.

Be interesting to see if any of them pick up stuff from the upcoming seminars.

I've been a bit slack documenting this week's training, so I'd better get it down before I forget.

Wednesday was, as usual knife class. Although we did train, doing the "Alas" form and some cuatro, we also talked a fair bit about upcoming seminars and such, so no significant stuff to add from that class.

On Thursday night I went over to Clint's. After a bit of emptyhand stuff (they should really invite Jarred over to give them a hand with some of this) we moved on to the main event - sparring. Ermihn (appoligies if the spelling is wrong, dude...) and I did some sparring with some of the senior students, and they fought amongst themselves as well (sparring, not brawling, that is !!!) On the whole, they're coming along OK, but a few of them have to unlearn some bad habits. At long range they sometimes have a tendency to lean back in a bow-stance/kokutsu-dachi kind of way, which leaves thier lead leg out and exposed. For me to hit. So I did. Seems kinda mean, but explaining what's wrong is not quite as effective as whacking it.

The other problem is the striking. Some of them strike in a way the DiamondBack guys used to call "primero". They strike in a very long arc, and the hand leads before the stick. The result is when they go to strike, say, the face, the tip of the stick travels from whatever guard, in a big arc above their head, and finally descends upon the target. This leaves them *wide* open. One guy in particluar I was able to hit 3-5 times after he launched his attack, and still not eat it. OK, I'm a fair bit more experienced, but this is something they've got to address. Again, experiencing the problem and then having an explaination of what went wrong, is way more effective than just telling them. I hope I stressed the learning part enough so as not to discourage the guy...

Yesterday morning way our usual happy slugfest, although I was a tiny bit late. (I was being very domestic, and not because I was in trouble for anything... for a change!)Not a bad turnout - Pete, Darren, Bradley, Jackson, Brent, Damien, and myself.

After a warmup we started on a drill punching the bags, while holding a stick. Firstly with the stick in open/abierta, the next round from closed/serrada. Next two rounds we repeated the process, but threw in elbows when the shout was given. Next up we did a variation on the metronone drill. The feeder had a thai pad on the other hand and fed the stick in the usual fashion. When the moment was right, the attacker would roof under a backhand strike and knee the thai pad, alternately left and right (one knee per iteration). I got a bit carried away and also worked a knee in under a pluma from the forehand, occasionally.

Next we worked a drill where the trainer had 2 thai pads. He'd hold for a horizontal forehand to the head, then for a backhand immediately after (so as the attacker strikes 1-2), then He'd hold for a right round kick. Each round would finish with 10 daets either side, then swap feeder/attacker. After this we did some sparring. I found it quite hard not to kick anyone. I think I fought Pete, Bradley, Jackson and Brent. Someone whapped Darren on the knob again. I'm beginning to wonder about that boy! :)

For the knife segment of the class we worked a technique against a low thrust. It was an armed variation of Crafty Dog's dogcatcher, as we've been incorporating some of this material into the classes. (I must hassle Damien for a watch of the DVD.) The technique goes thus: Attacker does a low forehand thrust. Defender forward triangles right then essentially sidesteps (in the PT style) left while applying the dogcatcher with the right/knife hand high, and the low hand on the knife arm. Then hook the knife arm with your knife back across the attackers body, and step through, slashing the gut. As a parting shot, stab into one of the glutes. This, according to Damien's experiences, will spasm and essentially paralyse the muscle, meaning no pursuit. It's important to do the dogcatcher with the the forearm of the knife arm making contact with his upper arm, as contacting with your blade may cause a snag. One of the guys asked about stabbing, erm , the "middle" rather than either glute. Damien's response - "If you hit the jackpot, he can keep your knife, you don't want if back..." Yuck.

We worked this for a bit, then discussed the upcoming events, for those not present on Wednesday.

Last night was the first re-instated stick class. I'd been hassling Damian for a while to restart it. Unfortunately, I twanged my back on Saturday (not sure who I was fighting) and couldn't do the muay thai class, but I showed up after for the stick class.

And there was no-one there but Damian. I had hoped one or two of Clint's guys would show up, but no. So - after a bit of a warmup we started sparring. Not hand sparring - full sparring. after about 15 minutes of sparring, Darren showed up as well, so we went into a round-robin format. There was no timing so rounds were 5-10 minutes apiece.

We went for about 45 minutes, and called it a day.

Damian mamaged to twang his live hand a few times, blocking stick strikes with it. Darren took one to bits He'd rather He hadn't. And I got this.

I'm managing, mostly, to get in head or body hits, but I'm getting tagged on the arm on the way in (or out). It's a timing and footwork thing I'm trying to sort out.

--------

As an aside, Master Rey Galang is visiting Oz of a month December-January, and there's a good chance we'll get him over here. So the rites and grading may be put off until then, although Rahneer is still coming over for a seminar in October, so far...

I helped out over at Clint's club on Thursday night. I took some of the more advanced students and walked them through some of the amarra drills from DiamondBack eskrima, adding bits and pieces from what I've done since then, playing with the footwork, doing open and closed versions of them, application to different attacks, and stuff. I think they got something out of it. We'll see if they practice, and if any shows up when they spar.

-------------------

This morning we had a 2 hour class. We started off with stick, after warmups. Mainly we played with the "metronome" drill Damian got from Marc Denny. We played with different entries. I found I could enter under a #2 with a roof block, and use a backhand umberella to cover my exit, without too much trouble. I had great difficulty trying it on the othe side. I could enter OK behind a pluma, but exiting back out to the right under a forehand umberella is going to take some work, as it doesn't feel very natural. Then we did some hand sparring.

After this we went to knife. Starting off with more applications of Alas, especially for the folks who weren't there on Wednesday nite. Then we played cuatro with padded knives for a bit.

We rounded out the class with some knife sparring, with helmets on. As a variation, the last couple of rounds were knife vs stick. In the middle of all this I got a mean headbutt from Pete, and twanged my back a bit at some point.

Damian had some pics of the meat we did blade testing on last week (I'll try and get some up on here...) Darren showed us his everyday-carry knives. The small(ish) Emerson wave one I'd seen before. But he pulled out a huge Cold steel folder, A Voyager X2 or something. This thing had at least a 6 inch blade in a clip-point/bowie style, and a pretty big handle. Given what we saw last week with just the tip 2-or-3 inches doing all the damage, this this has the effective length of a small bolo, heaps bigger than most the other knives (except my khukuri, but that's a different story. Apparently Damian was still getting bits of meat off the office window earlier this week...)

(First training post for a while...)

We've got a visit from Oz in October. Gradings and membership rites. Soooooo, much training.

We looked at the first tulisan knife form, Alas, in detail last night. (I missed the muay thai class).

Alas has 6 "counts", but is a much more complex form than just 6 moves.

Ostensibly they are (from a ready postition, knife crossed over emptyhand on chest)

1: step right foot forward 45, thrust to neck (forehand).
2: step back to middle, step left foot forward 45, thrust to neck (backhand).
3: step back to middle, step right foot back 45, small circular cut to grabbing hand.
4: step back to middle, step left foot forward 45, thrust to neck (backhand).
5: step back to middle, step right foot forward 45, thrust to neck (forehand).
6: step back to middle, step left leg back 45, small circular cut to grabbing hand.

and step back to middle.

Easy, eh.

But there is a lot more application.

For example, move 1:

From the ready postion (although you wouldn't stand that way) -
Opponent backhand cuts to you, you meet with the blade. Then parry the blade hand out with your live hand, as you drag-cut the knife arm from outside, under, then to the chest, throat, live hand, .... as you step 45, and deliver the neck thrust.

That's just one possible interpretation, to one possible attack.

From this form, you get the basic body mechanics, stepping and angling to allow this stuff to come out. All you have to do is figure it out.

Then you spar it...

After working the form, we did a bit of chalk sparring. Bradley made some holders to allow us to use long bits of chalk. But in the end, the chalk broke, and we went back to just holding it.

I noted that the sparring is much more cautious then with padded knifes, even though we wear less armour and limit targets as a result. I had way fewer chalk marks on my shirt than the first few times we did it. Although I did wear quite a few to my left elbow and forearm from parrying. Rather that than a stab in the chest, I guess.

Muay thai

shadow-box to warmup

drill: front kicks
-alternating front kicks (rear and front), one partner kicks, then the other.

drill: catch the front kick
-scoop the kick out with inside of forearm and hooked hand
-on the inside, right hand to lead kick, left to rear
- can cut kick the support leg after scooping

pad work:
-jab, cross, wide hook(slap), lead round kick (step out after slap)
-jab, cross, uppercut, cross, rear round kick

drill: evade round kick
-circle around (inside) round kick
-front and rear

drill: check round kick (low)
-shield outside, both partners, alternating lead and rear
-shield, then return kick

padwork: round kicks
-40 per leg

Lameco eskrima seminar

Firstly a varied double stick warmup:
- downward 8 (magbabayo
- upward 8 (salok-saboy)
- alternating downward X
- alternating upward X
- alternating horizontal cuts
- above with witiks open and closed

Also single stick:
- 1,4,1, low(bh), high(bh)

Footwork:
-female triangle
-back step (open gate)
-hanging back step (Ilustrisimo)
-retirada
-pekiti tirsia sidestep

Abecedario - This is basically bumping shoulders, with "swimming" motions.

Next we moved onto the muay thai "plum". We then combined the two.

Then we learned two techniques from an attempted grab. First is to cover the grab with an outside block, then reach the other arm under the grabbing arm, while getting the "back" position. The second technique is to use the opposite/facing arm do push the grabbing arn across the body, then move in for a tackle.

We then had a "play" with the stuff.

Then we did a pad drill with the clinch/pummel on and a low then overhand punch.

Then we played, with gloves.

Next up, we did some ground basics. We basically flowed judo holds. Mune gatame to kesa gatame to kami shiho gatame to kesa gatame to mune gatame. Then we played (with gloves) on the ground.

Finally we did a "workout" involving a series of bag circuits, similar to the combat conditioning class. We ended up with 1 minute of full power, full speed right round kicks to a baggage , with a minute of left kicks, after q short break, the a couple of minutes of pummelling/plum.

Bloody tiring...

Knife night.

Tonight we worked hooking in reverse grip.

Defender has knife in reverse and parrys forearm to forearm, close to his (D) knife.
